Minecoin: Microsoft seems to have new ambitions for Minecraft

Microsoft hopes to continue to benefit from the Minecraft phenomenon for as long as possible. The company has just registered the Minecoin brand, a virtual currency to be used in the game.

Since the acquisition of Mojang by Microsoft in 2014, the Redmond firm has not missed an opportunity to exploit the Minecraft vein. The game became a phenomenon even before it was released, and the popularity of the game continues unabated, especially among the youngest players. It is an exception in a market where, apart from Nintendo, Blizzard and GTA games, few people manage to keep their community alive for more than a few months.

In addition to ancillary projects, such as Minecraft: Education Edition, which allows for a first approach to programming, Minecraft should soon receive several important updates.

Minecoin: a new virtual payment method

Starting in the spring, Minecraft has been integrating a Market Place where players can pay for additional content created by freelancers. So far, they have been paid for with a virtual currency, as is often the case with video games, which makes it possible to hide the price in euros.

Microsoft is clearly interested in expanding the possibilities of this virtual currency since the company has recently registered the "Minecoin" trademark. The trademark was registered on July 13,2017, well after the launch of the Market Place and its virtual currency.

In the trademark application, the company describes Minecoin as a "virtual currency for use with a community on the Internet and a video game" that leaves little room for doubt about its intentions. Don't forget to visit UnspeakableGaming youtube channel!
